Sometimes, web professionals use them to highlight their affiliations and certifications on service-oriented websites.

Call-to-action studs are the nest prominent category of web studs. They encourage or ask users to click to perform certain actions. Common examples are Click Here, Download, Sign Up and Add to Cart studs. Their shape and placements vary from site to site.

Social media websites have proven to be a driving force on internet in last decade. There are some specialized studs used extensively on websites named Social or Social Media studs. They are divided in to three groups.

First one is Share studs. These studs are used to share content of a webpage on various social media sites. Examples include Facebook share and Tweet studs.

The next are Like studs. These studs are offered by social media portals freely, for webmasters to include on their pages. When a user like a page using these studs, his activity is shared and published at his social media profiles. Common examples include Google +1 and Facebook link button.

Social studs are third placeholders in this category. Their function is identical to share studs; however, they bookmark that URL of shared page on your bookmarking portals. Digg and Delicious studs are examples.

Advertisement studs are also very commonly used these days. They are also known as Paid studs. They are used to advertise other websites to send them potential traffic and leads.
